The Swag

You know how sometimes you come across an idea or product and think ‘oh my god, this is genius, why didn’t I think of that?’ Well, that’s pretty much exactly what we thought when we recently discovered ‘The Swag’ an amazing product that helps to keep your fruit and vegetables fresher for longer. Aussie mum, Peita Pini, is the creator of The Swag and tonight she explains to us what exactly The Swag is, how it works, where the idea came from, and what makes it so amazing….

Tell us a bit about yourself

I grew up in Kenthurst, North West of Sydney, Australia. I lived with my extended family on acreage surrounded by nature. We had a large veggie garden and grew most of our own fruit and vegetables; it was here I developed a deep love of nature, animals and eating healthy, natural food. The lights of the city drew me in to a fast paced environment of advertising and media where I spent over twenty years in sales. Now a wife and mother, I was a frustrated consumer tired of throwing out expensive fruit and vegetables. I was determined to find a solution, knowing food wastage is a big problem all around the world.

Where did the idea for The Swag come from?

I started really noticing condensation building up in the plastic bags or containers that I was storing my fruit and veggies in. One day, it suddenly dawned on me that if I was sealed in plastic without air or water I wouldn’t last long either! Well, this is the same for all living things. To me it made complete sense, if you want your fruit & veggies to stay fresher for much longer, then you need to give them an environment they can thrive inWith encouragement from friends and family, I set out on a journey of research, development, design, trademarks and patents that became The Swag; a non-toxic, environmentally-friendly, sustainable, machine-washable, breathable bag, meaning fruit & veggies stay fresher for much longer, naturally.

What exactly is The Swag, how do you use it and how does it work?

The Swag is a therapeutic sleeping bag for your veggies to get their beauty sleep in so they stay fresher for longer, naturally. It’s made of three different layers of unbleached, unseeded cotton materials (Australian Patent No. 2015221423 and International Patents Pending). Each layer plays a significant role in keeping fresh produce fresher for much longer. The outer layer of The Swag protects your fruit & veggies, holds moisture and helps prevent the water in the middle layer from drying up. However, it’s the other layers that make the difference. The thick middle layer absorbs and holds the water, almost like the inner layer of a baby’s nappy, it draws the moisture away from the baby’s bottom, or in this case, away from the fresh produce in your Swag. If too much moisture is up against your fruit & veggies; they’ll rot quicker. The very inner layer, provides a dryer protection barrier whilst allowing your fruit & veggies to draw on air and water as they need to stay alive and kicking. This system keeps everything fresher and nutrient rich for much longer.

What are the benefits to using The Swag?

The Swag addresses two key issues facing our world today;

1. Food waste. When we throw out food, we also waste the water, fuel and resources it took to get the food from the paddock to our plate. This drives up the cost of fresh produce for everyone. Out of the $8 billion worth of food wasted in Australia each year, $2.67 billion is fresh produce. The Swag significantly reduces household food wastage.

2. Plastic. The devastating impact plastic is having on our environment, wildlife and our health. Food waste is often sealed in plastic bags that go into landfill. Over time, methane gas builds up and it’s incredibly toxic once released into the environment when the plastic bag starts to break down. 429,000 plastic bags go into landfill every hour in Australia. Approximately 1 billion seabirds and mammals die each year by ingesting plastic bags. Not only that, these poor animals suffer a painful death. The plastic wraps around their intestines or they choke to death. There are an incredible number of environmental hazards that plastic is responsible for. The Swag is also non-toxic (Australian standards testing). Plastics are made via a process called polymerization. There are always chemicals that aren’t 100% set into the polymeric structure and can easily ‘bleed’ from the original plastic source. 90 of the chemicals that are of greatest concern to our health are used to make plastic.

Saving money. The average Aussie household throws away $700+ worth of fresh produce per year. Personally, I was throwing away a lot more than that. It only took one night of unexpectedly going out to dinner and I’d end up throwing most of the contents of my crisper away. With The Swag you’re more confident to buy in bulk because you know it’s going to last.

Saving time. Using The Swag means you need less trips to the shops which also means less impulse purchases!
