Personal Care Items: Organic Vs Non Organic, organic personal care items

We talk a lot about the benefits of eating organic and these days we are becoming more aware about reading the ingredients list on our food packaging, yet we probably don’t often think about what’s in the products we use on our bodies. Here at The Organic Place we’ve recently started to expand our product range and provide personal care items because we’ve come to discover that organic living is more than just what we eat. There are many other products out there that we use on a daily basis that can actually be harming us and our children and today I wanted to share with you three of those important items and why we should really be using the organic/natural version.

Feminine Hygiene Products:

Think about it; pads and tampons come into direct contact with the most sensitive part of a womans body yet quite often they contain harsh materials and chemicals. Most feminine hygíene products are made from synthetics like polyester or rayon and the cotton they use has been grown by using dangerous pesticides that have been linked to causing cancer among other things.

Not only are organic pads and tampons better for your own health and body but they are better for the environment too. They decompose much faster than conventional products and keep synthetic pesticides, chemicals and genetically modified materials out of the air, water and soil . Our TOMs organic range is made from pure organic cotton and the packaging is also environmentally friendly as it is recyclable and uses soy based ink.

Isn’t it ironic that a product we use to prevent skin cancer actually contains chemicals which have been linked to causing cancer? If you read the back of a chemical based sunscreen you’re likely to find some, if not all, of the following ingredients listed:

  • Oxybenzone
  • Benzophenone-3
  • Octyl-methoyl-cinnamates (OMC)
  • Octyl-dimethyl-para-amin-benzoic Acid (OD-PABA)
  • Homosalate (HMS)
  • 4-methy-benzyldencamphor (4-MBC)

Do a bit of research on these and you’ll discover that they have been found to increase the risk of developing cancer as well as altering hormone levels by disrupting the endocrine system. Natural sunscreens however contain the beneficial minerals titanium and zinc, which  act as a barrier blocking UV rays. Natural sunscreens also contain less allergenic ingredients than chemical sunscreens meaning they are less likely to cause irritation or an allergic reaction. They also help to nourish and soothe the skin rather than clog up your pores like chemical sunscreen can.

Our Soléo All Natural Sunscreen SPF30+ is an all-natural, organically produced sunscreen that is suitable for both adults and children. It does not contain any chemical UV-absorbers, titanium dioxide, or synthetic preservatives. It is made from natural ingredients including grapeseed oil, macadamia oil, green tea extract, sunflower oil, and beeswax. (For the full list of ingredients see our website).

Toothpaste is something we use on a daily basis but have you ever actually read the label of your toothpaste? You might be surprised to find it says things like ‘keep out or reach of children’ and ‘do not swallow’ and ‘contact poisons centre if accidently ingested’. What?! This is something we put in our mouths everyday!

Most toothpastes contain fluoride which we are told by dentists helps to strengthen teeth and prevent cavities, which is true, in small doses. But too much fluoride can actually be toxic; it can discolour and rot teeth, suppress the immune system, and has actually been linked to certain cancers and birth defects. Because fluoride is already added to our drinking water in Australia any more than that is just not required and can do more harm than good.

Other than fluoride many toothpastes also contain artificial sweeteners and colouring (so not good for your teeth) and other irritating/ harmful synthetic chemicals. A great alternative is our Grants Toothpaste which is free from harmful aluminium, fluoride, sugar and sodium lauryl sulphate and contain no parabens. It is also certified vegan and gluten free!
