My Organic Story with Sonya Driver

Here at The Organic Place we don’t only provide fresh fruit and veg but we also have a wide variety of other organic products too. We put in a lot of time researching a product before we decide to include it in our online store. We like to make sure it’s the real deal and so when we came across the Eco Tan range we just knew it was the perfect product us and our wonderful customers. It wasn’t only the fact that the products are Australian made, certified organic and free from animal testing but the story behind it’s creation was what really got us. And tonight we’ve invited Sonya Driver, creator and owner of the Eco Tan range to share that story with us.

Several years ago, Sonya was happy, some might even say she was ‘living the dream’. She had recently left her job as an international flight attendant to be a full time mother to her two beautiful young girls. Together with her husband, they had just bought a block of land by the beach and were planning to build their dream home.
But, Sonya’s world was turned upside down one day when her husband called and said the marriage was over. Suddenly, Sonia was abandoned, unemployed and living in a run-down house. She was left to raise her girls alone. To make the situation even worse, her gentle-spirited sister was diagnosed with a melanoma. In an attempt to lift her faith and be a strong, positive influence over her fragile sister, Sonya decided to begin a new life.

She pulled herself up off the ground and spent two weeks volunteering in East Timor, where she fed hungry children and comforted the sick. She shampooed the hair of women who had never before had their hair washed. After two weeks living in a desolate village with little food or water, Sonya was distracted from her grim situation at home. Surrounded by people who had nothing, she was able to put her situation in perspective.

When Sonya returned home to the Gold Coast she was determined to make a positive change and support her sister, whose cancerous growth had been cut from her arm, leaving her with a horrible scar. Still wanting to get a tan without the risk of harmful UV rays, they sisters sought the next best thing. They began getting regular spray tans but quickly became concerned about the ingredients they were constantly covering themselves with. Sonya began to do some research and says it only took her a few minutes to decide not to use their products anymore. After all, our skin is our largest organ, and anything we put on it is absorbed into our bloodstream.

Sonya threw herself into making a true organic tanning range made from chocolate, flower essence, chamomile and all things natural and organic. In 2011, Eco Tan made Australian history by becoming the first and only tanning manufacturer to be certified organic by the Organic Food Chain under the Australian government.
