My Organic Story- with Kathryn

Everybody who chooses to eat organic has a story about why. For some people it was a big event that shifted their thinking, for others it may have been a slow change over time. Whether your story is big or small it is always significant. We love hearing our customers stories; the reasons why they choose to eat organic. The stories are always different….and interesting. So we decided to introduce a new series to the blog; ‘My Organic Story’ where we open up this space to our customers to share their stories. Today, we meet Kathryn…..

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Kathryn and I live in the western suburbs of Melbourne with my husband and our three children aged 5, 3 and 3 months. I am a full time mum and also work part time in my own hairdressing salon and make up business from home. My days are busy; our house is always filled with the noise of kids running around playing and that’s exactly how we like it!

When and why did you start to eat organic?

I think I first became aware of the very real link between food and health several years ago when my husband and I first started trying for a baby. We struggled to fall pregnant and looking back I think it had a lot to do with my diet and unhealthy lifestyle. When we eventually fell pregnant and I gave birth to our beautiful baby girl I began to do more research into food. I read a lot and watched a few documentaries and was really shocked by what I found. In particular I was surprised by the ways that certain foods and preservatives etc. can adversely affect children’s behavior.

When my daughter started eating solids I made the conscious effort to try and provide her with natural and organic foods where possible. I also began to eat organic myself and have never really looked back since then.

What do you think are the greatest benefits of eating organic?

Where do I start….being and feeling healthier, looking after our environment and animals. But for me I guess the most important thing is giving my kids the best start possible in life. When I fill up our fruit bowl with fresh fruit or watch my kids eating their veggies it makes me feel like I’m doing ok as a Mum.

Have you come across any challenges from eating organic?

I have found it really hard to source organic products. Up until recently it was a real challenge for us to get organic fruit and veg. There weren’t any companies that delivered our area and I just didn’t have the time to go to farmer’s markets and buy the produce myself on a regular basis. The organic fruit and veg at the supermarket was also just far too expensive. A few months ago we discovered The Organic Place; they were affordable and delivered to our area so we’ve since started ordering through them on a weekly basis.

Is there anything that you really wished people understood better about eating organic?

I think that people often have the misconception that because I choose to eat organic I’m some kind of weird hippy…maybe I am ha! No really, I’m just a mum trying to do what’s best for my kids. My husband has also jumped on board since trying the fruit and veg from The Organic Place, he just thinks it just tastes so much better and I agree.

I really wish that people just understood more about the dangers and effects of certain ingredients and processes used to make our foods. I don’t like to preach; I just think it’s important to make informed choices.
