My Organic Story – Carlie

This week in the My Organic Story series we hear from Carlie, Emergency Service worker, wife and mother of four. Despite leading a busy life, she still manages to organise fresh organic produce for her family and they all attest to the great flavour.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself. . .

My husband and I are both Emergency Service workers. We work opposite shifts and have four children aged between two and ten years old.

2. When and why did you start to eat organic?

We have eaten organic on and off for ten years. We started when we had our first baby and were thinking about what we fed her and what was in our foods. I began worrying about sprays used and things added to almost everything we were eating. Then once we started eating organic, it was hard to go back.

3. What do you think are the benefits of eating organic?

The flavour is so much better! Once our kids told us not to buy broccoli from the supermarket as it was yucky. They would eat their Pa’s (organically grown) or organic broccoli but not the one from the supermarket. They were noticing that many foods tasted different. As a result, our kids have never expected fruit and veg to look “perfect” either.

4. What barriers have you come across?

People sometimes get defensive if you say you eat organic food as if you have judged them for not eating organic. Personally, I think, eat whatever you like and I’ll eat what I like. Organic food is not as readily available either. We are so used to the convenience of supermarkets that are open late every night. Sometimes you just have to think outside the square and plan for what’s in season. These things don’t naturally grow all year around so why is it for sale in the supermarket?

5. What do you wish more people understood about eating organic?
I wish people understood that organic food is expensive if it’s from the supermarket and is also packaged (in plastic) so that we know it’s organic. The prices are far closer to what we are used to when purchased through The Organic Place…even cheaper sometimes!

6. Anything else you’d like to share?

In writing this, I have just remembered that I miss organic meat which I haven’t ordered for a while. I better get onto that!
