This week on the blog Sheryn Mock, 3rd generation Bio-dynamic farmer of Mock Red Hill orchid shares her fascinating story about biodynamic farming in the Mornington Peninsular. The family-owned and operated orchard has been producing high quality, Bio-dynamic (enhanced organic) fresh fruit, apple juice, apple ciders and apple cider vinegar for the local region and beyond for many years.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your business.
Mock Red Hill located in the Hinterland of the Mornington Peninsula, is a well-established Bio-Dynamic Apple Orchard and processing facility. We are a family owned and operation business producing high quality, certified bio-dynamic (enhanced organic) fresh produce (Apple, Pears, Cherries & Avocados), apple and pear juices, craft ciders and cider vinegar.
It is the 5th generation of Mock sisters – Sheryn, Mardi-Claire and Demeter, who have created an interactive tourism experience on the farm welcoming he public to visit their farmgate, coffee shop and cider tasting lounge.
I am a 3rd generation Bio-Dynamic farmer, certified Inspector with the Bio-Dynamic Research Institute, and mum to 1. My time in the family business began with running the farmgate shop on the weekends when I was in high school. In 2009 I was given my first project and together with my father Neville, we created our Sparkling Apple Juice. As soon as I graduated school and turned 18 I began helping with the cider making.
In 2013 I created the Cider Lounge which is a showcase of everything “Mock”. While running the Cider Lounge I began learning the admin side of the business doing bookkeeping, I also took on the huge roll of Quality Assurance (QA) Officer and began handling our certification programs and managing 3rd party and internal auditing for both the orchard and our sister company Totally Pure Fruits; a Freeze dried fruit processing facility.
In 2016 I fell pregnant, my sister Mardi-Claire took over management of our Cider Lounge and Store. I continued to work sticking to my office duties.
Today I juggle full-time mum work, and part-time family business work.
Why did you decide you wanted to your produce or products to be organic?
It was my grandparents Wilma and Wally Mock who converted out farming to Bio-Dynamic in the 70’s, after noticing ongoing health issues within the family, my grandmother decided to make drastic changes to their diets allowing them to only eat organic, wholefoods, sure enough all the health issues disappeared. This got them thinking about the toxic spray they were using and the health of the apple trees.
Our orchard was first certified Demeter Bio-Dynamic in 1974.
Where do you source your ingredients from?
We grow all of our produce and use them to create a range of delicious certified bio-dynamic products
What is a typical day for you like?
There is no typical day for farmers…haha
What do you wish more people knew about organics?
We wish people new more about Bio-Dynamics, especially the Demeter Method – this is why we open an interactive space to the public so we could educate and share what we know.
What is your favorite organic product and why?
Obviously all of our products, BUT I have just recently tried the PANA ice cream range, vegan, certified organic and DELICIOUS! I also love Bio-Dynamic Tempeh by Tallyoh Farms and Earth Source Tofu
What’s your favourite meal to cook?
I love food and I love cooking, my go to easy dinner is a vegan super food salad; kale seasoned in Mock apple cider vinegar, tahini and lemon. Tri colour quinoa, roast; potato, carrot, beetroot, fresh; tomato, cucumber and avo with the tallyho tempeh. YUM
