Here at The Organic Place we specialise in organic fruit and vegetables but what you may not know is that we also sell many other organic products in our online store. One of these is Cinzia Cozzolino’s The Smoothie Bombs which she first created to get her own fussy eater to eat something for breakfast. I think most parents can sympathise with that problem! Cinzia tells us how her clever idea grew from just meeting her family’s needs to a successful business that provides a quick and healthy solution for busy people everywhere.
Tell us a bit about yourself and The Smoothie Bombs.
I’m Cinzia Cozzolino, nutritionist and single mum of two girls. I created The Smoothie Bombs because my youngest daughter started skipping breakfast. Determined to find a convenient, tasty and healthy solution, I started making pre-portioned smoothie boosters using the ingredients in my pantry. Lo and behold my daughter began to drink smoothies for breakfast!
Friends and family started wanting my smoothie boosters after they learnt of their success in our household. I realised how common it is for families to have fussy eaters. In fact, studies show almost a third of Australians skip breakfast 3 times a week, with 56% of our population giving it a miss at least once a week.
Seven years down the track and The Smoothie Bombs is our family business! My youngest daughter (who now eats breakfast every day) runs the business with me. We believe in changing bad habits by making good choices simpler and our goal is to get every Australian to eat breakfast.
Why did you decide you wanted to create an organic product?
I have always eaten organic myself. When I first made up the Smoothie Bombs recipe at home, it was using the organic ingredients in my pantry. Naturally, if I feed my kids organic food, I want to feed everyone organic food. The mother in me that wants to give everyone the best quality.
Where do you source your ingredients from?
We source our ingredients from local businesses. We try our best to buy Australian products as much as possible. A lot of our superfood ingredients come from South America on sustainable farms.
What is a typical day in your business like?
Every day is different. In a small business you have to be a jack of all trades. This includes being the admin, the delivery guy, the negotiator, the orderer, the cleaner, the social media guru, the salesperson as well as the face of the brand in meetings and public speaking engagements. There is never a dull moment, that’s for sure.
What do you wish more people understood about organic products like Smoothie Bombs?
We are certified organic which means we have a governing body (Australian Certified Organic) that audits us to make sure everything is 100% organic and can be traced back to its source. This even includes the cleaning equipment!
There are a lot of products that claim to be ‘organic’. Unless a company says ‘certified organic’ and has an official logo to prove it, they don’t have to use organic in their product. Australia is the only country that allows this to happen.
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
We have lots of new flavours coming! Stay tuned 🙂
