Here at The Organic Place we don’t only provide fresh fruit and veg but we also have a wide variety of other organic products too. We put in a lot of time researching a product before we decide to include it in our online store. We like to make sure it’s the real deal and so when it came to the TOM Organic range we just knew it was the perfect product for us and our wonderful customers. It wasn’t only the fact that the products are Australian made, certified organic and free from animal testing but the story behind it’s creation was what really got us. And tonight we’ve invited Aimee Marks, creator and owner of the TOM Organic to share that story with us.
When and how did the idea for TOM Organic come about?
I actually came up with the idea in high school. It started out as a design project; I wanted to solve the problem of tampons rolling around in the bottom of my bag so set out to design new packaging and it just grew from there. As soon as I read the ingredients list on a box of tampons, I realised that they were made of synthetics ingredients and pesticide sprayed cotton. I was horrified to find that they contained polypropylene, viscose rayon, bleach, and dye and I quickly came to understand the detrimental impact these ingredients have on our health and the environment. I just knew I had to find an alternative! I felt a responsibility on behalf of Australian women to create an alternative made from pure ingredients that didn’t compromise the environment. I went on to do an entrepreneurial business degree at RMIT and within 18 months of finishing, I launched TOM Organics. I was just 23 years old. Our products are now available to buy all over Australia.
Where did the name TOM come from?
When we first launched in 2009, we were purely a feminine hygiene brand and TOM stood for “Time Of Month”. We’ve grown a lot since then and now have a maternity range (which we launched in 2014), a baby range, Tooshies by TOM, and more products in the pipeline. But the name TOM has always stuck because we are still very connected to it and there is a real brand loyalty from our customers too.
Why do you think it is important for women to use certified organic pads and tampons?
We use over 15,000 tampons in a lifetime and they come in contact with the most absorbent skin in our bodies. There are chemicals and insecticides being sprayed onto cotton that you wouldn’t let near you if you knew what they were, and the processes involved in turning tree pulp into rayon not only have health implications, but are incredibly detrimental to the environment too. I decided to make TOM products from 100% organic cotton, which means there is not a single chemical in any part of the process, from the farm to your bathroom. By using organic cotton we keep synthetic pesticides, chemicals and genetically modified materials out of the air, water and soil.
Anything else you’d like to add
TOM Organic is so much more than just a female personal care brand. We were founded on the philosophy that women should never have to compromise their wellbeing or the health of the planet. It’s all about creating positive impact through simple everyday purchases. Our mission is to empower women to live healthier, more fulfilled lives; through buying and living more consciously. Empowering women to read ingredients lists and question the brands they may have previously trusted, just because they are big. We seek to inspire conscious living, so women are empowered to make their own informed decisions and talk openly about their needs and their health.
How amazing is that! Thanks so much to Aimee for sharing her story with us.
